What is Whiplash?

Whiplash refers to neck pain that occurs after some type of an injury to the soft tissues in the neck area. The affected soft tissues are ligaments, muscles, and tendons in the neck area. This condition sometimes appears after the neck has been unexpectedly forced into an unnatural movement. Other names for whiplash are cervical strain, cervical sprain, or hyperextension injury. This condition often is caused during an automobile accident. It can also result from falls that are accidental, sports accidents, and during a physical assault. The condition of whiplash was first noted and described in 1928. This painful condition is quite common and can result in a severe amount of pain in some individuals.
