3rd Annual Northwestern Ballroom Classic
Rules and Regulations

Costumes: Costumes are not permitted in newcomer, bronze or silver events. Costumes are allowed in gold, open, fun dance and team match events.

Newcomer Eligibility: For the Northwestern Ballroom Classic, a newcomer is defined as someone who started dancing AFTER August 2007. Both members of a partnership must be eligible to compete in newcomer unless the lead is a female dancer.

Proficiency Points: Please register only for events that you are eligible for based on YCN proficiency points. For instance, if you have won a particular bronze event more than twice, it’s time to move up to silver and give someone else a chance.

Multiple Levels: Each individual is allowed to dance in TWO consecutive syllabus levels within each style (Smooth, Standard, Rhythm and Latin) so long as they are eligible based on YCN proficiency points. For instance, someone entered in bronze rhythm may also dance in silver rhythm but not in gold rhythm. All competitors are eligible to dance in the open category.

Female-Female Partnerships: For teams that have a shortage of male dancers, female-female partnerships are permitted in newcomer and bronze syllabus events. The lead in a female-female partnership may also dance as a follow in a higher syllabus level (the ‘two consecutive syllabus levels’ rules and YCN proficiency points will not apply when she is leading). Please notify us if you are a female who will both lead and follow so we can help you register.

Novice, Pre-Championship and Championship: In previous years we have rarely had participants above novice level and so we have combined the novice, pre-championship and championship levels into the open level. All open level events are single dance. If you normally dance in pre-championship or championship events and would like us to open a particular category we are willing to do so, please contact us.
